To start with, this will depend on the type of installation – pipe clipped to PIR insulation e.g. in a typical new build or a new extension.
As a guideline the cost of a high quality wet underfloor heating system supplied should be around £ 12 to £ 16 per sq. m. subject to floor area and type of project. Guideline price mentioned in this article excludes any potential extras such as aluminium heat emission plates or overlay panels etc. The retrofit market with e.g. use of grooved panels has been increasing in the last decade. Retrofit underfloor heating projects will continue to increase with immediate effect due to the switch from boilers to lower temperature heat pumps.
For non-DIY projects a standard (warm water) underfloor heating installation can vary between £ 5 and 10 per sq. m. – again assuming a standard installation method. Size of project also has an impact on cost. Timber suspended floors and ‘tie-pipe-to-mesh’ methods are more time consuming and so more expensive. In particular grooved overlay panels where installers require several days for preparation work and potential latex self levelling etc – in the latter case you may be looking at installation only at £ 30 or £ 35 per Sq.M.
In general, for small heated floor areas e.g. a kitchen only, the ufh kit may be more expensive per Sq.M. than above mentioned guideline costs.
Many customers ask us if wet underfloor heating is cheaper or more expensive than radiators?
The answer is that an underfloor heating system is probably 10 % -20 % more expensive to purchase, but then again the running cost is lower for water underfloor heating.
Another common question is if water underfloor heating is cheaper or more expensive than electric underfloor heating?
The answer is simple. An electric underfloor heating kit is cheaper to buy, e.g. in a bathroom only easier to install, however the running cost is much higher compared with any wet underfloor heating system.
Electric underfloor heating is mainly fitted in small wet rooms such as en-suites and bathrooms where they may in some situations be more practical.
